Football lies at the heart of popular culture in Italy. It is played, watched, written about and talked to death by millions virtually everyday of the year.

"It all started for us with Beckham, of course," admits Domenico Dolce when asked why Dolce & Gabbana has produced a photographic book on footballers. "Fashion was really getting too removed from real life. So we looked for new references, and footballers are perfect. They are real men - they have not come from rich families, so they have fulfilled a dream."

The images, by Mariano Vivanco, of Milan's mighty soccer players in close-up dressed by Dolce & Gabbana, are intended to show that these "modern-day gladiators" offer a fresh and wholesum male beauty. He has successfully immortalized the Milan AC team in over 150 sophisticated black & white and full color snapshots.
