Mark Manders is a young Dutch artist who has received considerable international acclaim for his sculptural installations, drawings, and artist books, which offer an abstracted meditation on notions of portraiture.

The majority of his work consists of deceptively simple, re-made versions of found objects and familiar things. The artist's uncannily accurate, detailed re-creations of material facts  from the everyday world are often discomfiting and functionless versions of their originals. As such, they take on a primarily symbolic role.

Parallel Occurrence presents 10 works which Manders has been working on since 1986. He has been working on Self-Portrait as a Building, an ongoing investigation that evolves with each subsequent presentation. Since 1990 he has presented exhibitions of installation-based sculptural works which are fragments of his 'self-portrait' designed for imaginary rooms.

His sculptures also frequently lie on the ground: from the smooth fox with mouse attached to the large Etruscan-like clay figures, all look like the sleeping victims of gravity.
