The incessant flow of mass media images creates a second reality superimposed on that of direct experience, and represents a fertile field of investigation for contemporary art. These pages present the research of six artists who extract and rework the images from print media. Thomas Ruff and Ian Anull reproduce photographs found in newspapers, enlarging them, removing them from their original context in pursuit of a truth and of their latent, concealed power.

Giovanni Bai, with his videopaintings, breaks down television images, exploiting interference. Gianluigi Colin discovers surprising similarities between contemporary icons and those of the past, seen as being embedded in our memory. Gabriele Di Matteo re-paints subjects from the printed page, while Cesare Viel re-draws them, adding phrases by great visionary writers. Similar to Duchamp's readymades, press photos shift from the status of an industrial product/copy to the dimension of unique, original artwork.
