After the large international retrospective exhibition held at the Musee Granet in Aix-en-Prevence in autumn 2008, the first Italian exhibition devoted to this romantic painter who was already on the road towards modernity leading from Valenciennes to Corot. After years of exhibitions on contemporary art, the Academie Francaise takes a leap back into the past proposeing this exceptional artist, pupil of David and a close friend of Ingres. The exhibition devoted to Francois-Marius Granet (1775-1849) contains about 100 works (oils and water-colors) which highlight different aspects of the French painter's work: from his better-known creations for the public sphere (historical paintings, interiors for churches in Rome) to his more intimate works, painted in the open air in and around Rome.
