The General Jungle or Carrying on Sculpting is a work made up of 23 large drawings in charcoal on canvasblacked paper. It is part of a series of work by Gilbert & George completed between 1970 & 1974, the so-called Charcoal on Paper Sculptures.
This work originated from a series of slides (The nature photo pieces, 1971) that the artists projected onto sheets of paper, before tracing over the images in charcoal. In these drawings, Gilbert & George are portrayed as living sculptures within a hypothetical London park - an echo of their living performance works.
Only twice do they appear in a street, as they |walk through a built up area. On a formal level the work refers to the tradition of English landscape painting, while making an ironical allusion to a primordial Adam and Eve "male couple" in an urban Garden of Eden.
