In Rider Haggard's 1885 classic King Solomon's Mines, the indomitable Allan Quartermain sets out in search of the long lost source of the fabulous gold of Ophir. Suleiman's Gold picks up the trail where Haggard left off - with the premise that Quartermain was mistaken that the goldfields of Southern Africa were not those of biblical legend.

Quartermain's grandson Rider has long been in thrall to the romance of the Solomon story and has dedicated much of his life to theorising on the whereabouts of the fabled Ophir. Along with his trusty sidekick - the indefatigable Hutcheon Graham (a man as sceptical as Rider is awestruck) - he scours the Horn of Arfica from the holy Moslem city of Harar in north-eastern Ethiopia to the mysterious and remote south-western veld.

Suleiman's Gold in narrated by Rider's son Alan Quartermain - a young man who, once of age, inevitably becomes seduced by his fathers lifelong quest. Together, he, Rider Hutcheon and a cast of characters that ranges from real historical figures to classic fictional heroes (including the notorious Harry Flashman) embark on a series od adventures and escapades that span generations.
