Laugh or Cry is the story of Sylvia Hurst, who was one of the last Children's Transport trains of World War II. She tells the story of her life during Hitler's rise to power and the rise of Nazism through the brainwashing of an entire nation. Her family came to her village as Schutzjuden - Jews under the protection of the local Baron - in 1777. The mounting anti-semitism in Germany was also accompanied by the untangling of the Jewish middle-class. Through this all, Sylvia was growing into her adolescence, becoming a young woman.
Sylvia Hurst tells her story with tenderness, humour, and sincerity. It is a tale of courage and stoicism, and a world that no longer exists.
